Stable Oscillations in Single Species Growth Models with Hereditary Effects*

چکیده
We study single species growth models incorporating hereditary effects. Detailed calculations are carried out for a specific model with one delay parameter T as T varies in the entire range T > 0. Using perturbation and bifurcation techniques, we show that the effect of the hereditary term is that the equilibrium state, which is stable for small values of T (say T< T,), is unstable for T, T2. We show that for T, <T < T2 a stable oscillatory state, exists which bifurcates from the equilibrium state through an exchange of stability at T= T, and T= T2. Numerical computations and graphs of the solutions are given for the solutions in all ranges of T.

Time delays in single species growth models.
A general model is considered for the growth of a single species population which describes the per unit growth rate as a general functional of past population sizes. Solutions near equilibrium are studied as function of epsilon = 1/b, the reciprocal of the inherent per unit growth rate b of the population in the absense of any density constraints. Roughly speaking, it is shown that for large e...
متن کاملTransient oscillations induced by delayed growth response in the chemostat.
In this paper, in order to try to account for the transient oscillations observed in chemostat experiments, we consider a model of single species growth in a chemostat that involves delayed growth response. The time delay models the lag involved in the nutrient conversion process. Both monotone response functions and nonmonotone response functions are considered. The nonmonotone response functi...

The rock-paper-scissors game and its generalizations with S>3 species are well-studied models for cyclically interacting populations. Four is, however, the minimum number of species that, by allowing other interactions beyond the single, cyclic loop, breaks both the full intransitivity of the food graph and the one-predator, one-prey symmetry. Lütz et al. [J. Theor. Biol. 317, 286 (2013)] have ...
متن کاملThe evolution of oscillatory behavior in age-structured species.
A major challenge in ecology is to explain why so many species show oscillatory population dynamics and why the oscillations commonly occur with particular periods. The background environment, through noise or seasonality, is one possible driver of these oscillations, as are the components of the trophic web with which the species interacts. However, the oscillation may also be intrinsic, gener...
